Back in September rumors started flying about regularly scheduled programming coming to YouTube in 2012.  There was talk that YouTube was negotiating with some big studios and celebs to bring a constant stream of TV-quality content to their viewers.  Well folks, the time has come.  Just hours ago, YouTube announced that new original channels will start appearing on YouTube next month.  Over 90 channels have been announced so far.

Over the summer, YouTube revealed that hundreds of partners are now making six-figure incomes, but how much do individual video partnerships make?  Earlier this week Claire Cain Miller of The New York Times reported that it may be more than you think.  Cute videos of kids going viral could be enough to send the kids to college and more, and though YouTube expressly forbids their partners to reveal exactly how much money they make from YouTube, they’ve revealed some pretty nice estimations.

Exactly one week after the Sesame Street YouTube channel was hacked, with children’s videos replaced with porn, another major brand has fallen victim to YouTube hackers—Microsoft.  Microsoft’s YouTube channel was hacked on Sunday afternoon.  All of the videos were taken down from the site and personal videos were uploaded, asking viewers to submit content, including background images, for the channel.

YouTube’s library of licensed music just got a whole lot bigger thanks to a new deal with Merlin, the world’s fifth largest music label after Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Group.  Merlin represents 14,000 artists including Aphex Twin and The Prodigy and now, when YouTubers upload videos with music from Merlin artists, instead of having the soundtrack removed from the video, the artists will receive royalties.

Yesterday afternoon the Sesame Street YouTube channel was taken offline following a lewd hacker attack in which many of the channel’s videos were taken down and replaced with pornographic video clips.  The channel returned to YouTube this morning, but the incident has left a bad taste in the mouth of Sesame Street fans the world over because, seriously, who would do something like that?

YouTube has just become the next site to hop on the social commerce bandwagon with the announcement that they are launching a new feature called the Merch Store through which YouTube partners can offer merchandise directly from their channels.  The store will be rolled out over the coming weeks, starting with music partners.  Through the Merch Store, fans will be able to buy anything from digital downloads, concert tickets, meetups, t-shirts and more.

Earlier this year the NASA crew fielded YouTubers questions live from space and now YouTube is headed galaxy-ward once again.  Yesterday YouTube announced their new YouTube Space Lab project with Lenovo.  They’re asking students, ages 14 to 18, to submit videos explaining ideas for science experiments for space and the winning ideas will be performed and live streamed from the International Space Station.
