The Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism issued the results of a study on how people use tablets. It focuses on the main activities performed daily on tablets. Some of the findings are slighlty but not entirely surprising. Hint: Social is not number one or two.

We've seen a few peeks of Creative's Zii-powered Android tablets over the last couple months, but being rather spec-oriented, this reference platform didn't get much attention. This video does a better job of showing off the advantages of having a general-purpose parallel CPU array like StemCell. It's a special 48-core chip they've married to a 1.5GHz Cortex A9, and it's dedicated to media processing.

Google Docs has not been particularly friendly to smartphones and tablets. However, Google has been making steady progress in removing that reputation. Unlike other recent mobile announcements which were web based, this Google Docs enhancement is an update for an Android app that takes advantage of the larger display of Android Honeycomb tablets.

As expected, today Amazon announced their new tablet called the Kindle Fire. As we reported earlier today, the Kindle Fire will cost $199, and will be available in November. Despite the widely accepted public knowledge before the big reveal today (including pre-announcement photos on TechCrunch), Amazon managed to pull of a Steve Jobs type "one more thing" this morning by announcing not just one but four new Kindle models and a new web browser that uses its own considerable cloud services.

The analysts at Gartner have released a new report today, detailing tablet market trends and forecasts. Not surprisingly, their findings confirm the obvious: the iPad is killing it. According to the firm, the Apple iPad will account for 73.4% of tablet sales worldwide this year, and no other platform besides Android will have more than a 5% share of the market during this time.

Microsoft’s new Windows 8 Metro is now on the market enhancing social media usage and, hopefully, making user’s lives easier. But, Adobe Flash and other plug-ins may not find the new product so special. Window 8 Metro’s interface will not support Adobe Flash or other plug-ins. In its place the new product welcomes the HTML5 set of web standards, according to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer team leader Dean Hachamovitch.

Newspapers and magazines have been trying to find a winning formula for publishing on the iPad and, to a lesser degree, other tablet platforms. The publisher of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and philly.com is pursuing a slightly different strategy. The have teamed with a tablet manufacturer to deliver a low-priced tablet to deliver their product.

Japan's biggest mobile carrier NTT Docomo is stepping up its efforts to bring Xi, its LTE service, to the masses: today, the company announced two tablets that are compatible with the standard for the Japanese market, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and a new device from Fujitsu, the so-called ARROWS Tab LTE F-01D.

Just like the rumor stated, Toshiba used IFA 2011 to announce its latest Android tablet and it's just as tiny as it looked. The AT200 packs a 1.2GHz TI OMAP 4430 CPU, up to 64GB of memory, and most of the ports that made the Toshiba Thrive popular: micro-USB, microSD, and micro-HDMI. Toshiba claims that the battery is good for "eight hours of video consumption."

With the exception of Apple's iPad, it is hard to point to a tablet computer that can be considered successful. The only two slate form factor devices (other than the iPad) that have captured any mindshare at all are Amazon's Kindle and Barnes & Noble's Nook Color. The Nook Color became a general purpose Android tablet earlier this year although it does not have a camera, GPS and other hardware features now commonly associated with tablets.
