One of the really cool capabilities of Android is its speech recognition. You can run a Google query by speaking the term or say a command like "call frank mcpherson" to control the phone. Unfortunately prior to today only Android users in the United States could use voice actions, but today Google has released an update to Voice Search so that users in the U.K, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain can now use them.

A new version of the Google Voice app for Android is now available in the Android Market. The new version improves notifications for receiving text messages and voice mail, provides warning of no data connectivity before sending a text message, and doesn't require a data connection for all phone calls.

Voice recognition is not new, I have been using it on mobile devices ever since Microsoft first released Voice Command back in 2003. Of course, the quality of recognition and the ability to control devices has improved significantly since 2003, but a new patent filing by Apple reveals the possibility for voice recognition going to a whole other level. The patent application describes a process for identifying your voice and understanding complex commands.

In light of the discovery that thousands of voice mail accounts were broken into in England, voice mail system security has been in the limelight. What is shocking is how mobile phone operators haven't required passwords to access voice mail systems.
